User Reviews: Red Corner is quite obviously a comment on the current situation in Red China. Being a good friend of the Dalai Lama and Tibet in general, the "the Chinese government and army are all bad people" argument is what keeps this film going. It could almost be considered a crash course on what is still going on in China today. Don’t get me wrong, the film is actually quite well done and has a good story to go with it which makes it more than a two hour CBS special.The whole plot centers around the Gere character being framed for a murder of a Chinese girl. The girl just happens to be the daughter of an important general which makes Gere’s chances of survival all the less. Sure, all of the cliches are built into this film, especially the wrongfully imprisoned man (haven’t the 90′s been a real haven to these kinds of films ever since "The Fugitive?"). But the plot is still interesting the film throughout and other than a few twists that seemed unnecessary, keeps focus until the end. I never will understand why Gere didn’t just stay at the embassy, he must have been somewhat crazy.The bond between the two main characters starts off very cold and warms until the end with an airport scene that was very fitting. After watching the film you’ll know what I mean. The chase scene through the city is very exciting although at times farfetched, but still makes for some good action in between a few dramatic scenes. Even without on screen violence ala American History X or Saving Private Ryan, this film still manages to invoke fear simply knowing that the Chinese will do whatever they please, regardless of human life.This film only helps to show China as an unhumanitary state with archaic laws and traditions. When one is forced to plead guilty in order to have leaniency directed towards them, something is really wrong. Hopefully this film will open some eyes to the situation and be a catalyst to future change.7/10 stars.

User Reviews: Commander Sam Keenan is appointed second-in-command at the US Embassy in Moldavia, mere hours before the Ambassador is killed. The streets are full of insurgents attempting a violent uprising against the democratically elected president, who is now in the care of the US within the embassy. However with the insurgents laying siege outside and rescue many hours away, options for survival and limited and Keenan comes under pressure from without and within.In a way I suppose we should see it as Van Damme returning to Europe to use his American-found fame to bolster film-making in Europe, however another way to see it is that his appeal has dwindled badly and he has taken to doing basic action films in Eastern European to squeeze every last penny out of the budget. Watching this film among others, it is hard to avoid the fact that the truth is almost undoubtedly the latter. The plot is fairly basic but in essence it is a war-zone version of Assault on Precinct 13. So what we are a looking for is a ratcheting up of tension across the film, with the silence being harder to watch than the action – which by extension is more exciting for its quality as payoff.Sadly that is not what the film delivers because instead everything is played out as basic as you like, with minimal tension, obvious plotting, wooden acting and action that plays like they all just hoped having shots of gunfire would be sufficient to justify it as an "action film". It is never awful by any means and indeed for those trawling the cable listings looking for something to have on like visual wallpaper, you could do much worse. But this is hardly praise and all through the film I never shook the feeling of it being a cu-price low rent affair with no aspirations beyond the bottom shelf of the video store and maybe a 2am slot on a cable station. Obviously there is a limited amount of money to play with but this is only an excuse for scale – not for how good a film it is and director Fellows isn't able to do much. His cast don't help, with Van Damme on auto-pilot (without even much action to speak of for him), Cox filling a tired cliché of a female role and nobody else making an impression even if they had beeniven the material. The Eastern European villains are so bland and generic that even modern video games can produce a more realistic cast of characters.Second in Command will be found on poor slots on so-so TV stations, was made in Eastern Europe and stars Jean-Claude Van Damme so really one could say that the clues are all right there for you to see for yourself. If you do decide to watch it then please note that it does live up to the low standards it suggests it will have and, while too bland to be really awful, there isn't much about it worth seeing.

User Reviews: I really liked this movie simply because I identified and loved the Jack Brooks character so much. The purpose of the movie is to show a regular guy who is frustrated with the world around him trying to find his niche. What's so entertaining and hilarious is watching Jack blow in situations we all would like to blow up in while earnestly trying to trying to fit in and be normal.I think this movie has a very strong Canadian sensibility which some Americans just don't see the humor in. I'm reminded a lot of Trailer Park Boys, which I personally find hilarious, but understandably some people just don't get. This kind of material is funny if you find the humor in lower/lower middle class life and the types of struggles you have to deal with when you belong to those classes. This movie isn't a mindless slaughter-fest but instead focuses on the human element with humor and heart. If you enjoyed films like Shaun of the Dead that uses the horror genre as a backdrop to help bring out humorous yet relatable human struggles into focus then you'll like Jack Brooks. If your looking for a non-stop deluge of blood and a forgettable human characters whose only purpose is to be slaughtered then I suggest you look elsewhere.

User Reviews: I have to say, I am judging this movie based off what it is. Five years ago when "Hustle and Flow" came to theaters people spoke highly of it….why? Because it was a movie about a low-life pimp that had dreams of becoming a famous rapper, with key songs like "Whip that trick" and "Hard out here for a Pimp"……so taking all things into consideration, it was a good movie because when you are telling a story like this, they did the very best they could, and Terrance Howard's performance was captivating…..moving now to a smaller scale…a much smaller scale.Killjoy 3 was a third installment to an extremely sup-bar horror series made by one of the most industrial sup-bar production companies of all time. It's no secret, Full Moon's Charlie Band is more of a good business man than a good filmmaker. His budgets are usually 100K, and they usually make 10 times that….smart guy. It was also a movie that did not feature a single name actor. Yes I know Darrow Ingus has worked in movies for decades, yes I know Spiral Jackson is a young and up and coming actor, yes I also know Trent Hagga is an established writer….but I only know that after looking every single one of them up on multiple sites, and if I wasn't reading their names off the stationary as we speak, then I still wouldn't know how to spell them! To make a long story short, for as many strikes as this movie already had against it, it was good.The story was eh…the duologue was pure, but the execution by directed John Lechago was well done.The make-up, I give an A+ obviously the best feature in the movie was the work done on Freakshow, Batty, Punch, and the name character himself. The blood on Zilla after he gets beat up by Punchy is also very well done, as he is on the floor coughing up blood.The acting, the best performance obviously goes to the name character, Trent Hagga returned as Killjoy only to improve upon the character, in a lot of ways he reminded me of the Dark Knight's Joker. The Proffesor holds his own as well, with a high authoritative presence, you can tell we are looking at a seasoned actor. I must say, out of all the characters in the movie, Zilla is the only one I actually wanted to see stay alive, of course we all knew it would be Sandy. Spiral Jackson really made me like this character as I could see him coming back for a fourth installment: Killjoy 4, Zilla Revenge!

User Reviews: This is the most horrible movie I’ve ever seen, and I’ve sat through both Ishtar and all three of the Dead Gentleman films. I had to watch this movie for a research project and got it for free through an interlibrary loan program, but this movie wasn’t worth the five seconds it took me to track it down in WorldCat, let alone the four hours (I had to watch Ian Somerhalder’s commentary track as well) I spent watching it. The visuals are impressive, I’ll admit that, but the lack of any kind of redeeming story quality killed it for me. The voiceovers and even much of the dialogue (what little there is once the lines containing only expletives are discounted) is stilted and unrealistic and does not flow nearly as well as a writer like Kevin Smith’s or even Kevin Williamson’s. Not to mention that anyone who’s seen both Less Than Zero and American Psycho has already seen this entire movie, only with different set pieces. James Van Der Beek is no Christian Bale or Robert Downey Jr., and only the cameo characters (Fred Savage, Jay Baruchel, Faye Dunaway, Eric Stoltz) are even remotely entertaining. The rest of the characters I just wanted to punch repeatedly every time they appeared on screen. Everything is overdone to the point of exhaustion, from the backwards-running film to the maniacal laughter of Sean as he finally falls over the edge after the "battle" at Rupert’s house. Of the principal actors, Shannon Sossamyn is dishrag-bland; Van Der Beek is trying so hard to be "edgy" that you can see his neck veins bulging; Jessica Biel actually does a good job with her character,it’s just too bad her character is despicably irredeemable; and Ian Somerhalder is great–until you realize he’s just ripping off Tom Cruise in Risky Business. Somerhalder also needs to just shut his @#$%^& mouth already about the gay thing. It’s not like it’s hurt Ewan McGregor or Jonathan Rhys Meyers any.I’m not totally made of stone–I did laugh at Van Der Beek wanking off to "Afternoon Delight" and Somerhalder humping his reflection in the mirror. I also fell off the bed laughing at Van Der Beek’s "suicide" (insert eye-roll here) attempt. What a loser.Avoid this movie like the plague. If you want a stylized movie about sex, drugs, and rock and roll, watch Velvet Goldmine or The Pillow Book.

User Reviews: You know the drill: young Alan Parrish gets sucked into a board game called Jumanji, returns when a brother and sister are playing 26 years later, and has to battle the animals that wreak havoc on the town. It all seems pretty simple, but they play some neat tricks with it in the movie. As the adult Alan, Robin Williams is more subdued than usual, but still makes the character admirable. With good support from Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst, David Alan Grier, Bebe Neuwirth, Jonathan Hyde and Patricia Clarkson, this is a pretty interesting movie. I will admit that the monkeys looked pretty fake, but we can’t dwell on that in this movie; the point is to enjoy oneself while watching it.Oh and one more thing: from "Jumanji", I learned the difference between alligators and crocodiles.

User Reviews: It's a tale about a doctor(Robin Williams) taking on a new job in the Bronx. His new patients are something of the unusual. A handful of them share an unexplainable disease. The rare disease has left these people frozen in time. One of his main patients is a man named Leonard Lowe, played by Robert Deniro. Doctor Sayer begins a diligent study. To the present day, there are still many questions surrounding this strange disease. During one amazing season in the late 60's, a miracle happened. In my opinion, both Robin Williams and Robert Deniro should have won Oscars for this film. I always say that Williams with a beard equals an amazing performance. His role as the meek Dr. Sayer is heartwarming. He plays perfectly off Deniro's character. Robert Deniro is golden as Leonard, the disease afflicted patient that gives all of his consciousness to help Dr. Sayer. With the help of a large dose of medicine and care all the patients and hospital staff have awakenings.One of the most important words spoken in the film is: LEARN.This film teaches me to appreciate life a little more every time I see it. It hopefully sends us the message to enjoy life. To love and embrace what we have and perhaps learn not to take the natural joys in life for granted is the message.

User Reviews: I am not familiar with any of director Amanda Gusack's other work but, after seeing this fantastic little thriller, I hope she gives us a few more decent movies in future because she deserves to get at least a little bit of notice.Melissa George stars as the woman kidnapped and held captive after an engineered car crash that sees both her and her young son (a diabetic) in the clutches of some very bad men. Her son is being held in a separate room and his safety is tied to Melissa's character actually helping the baddies figure out where her husband has gone with a whole load of money that they claim he has ripped off of them. But is her husband capable of such a double life? Can she find out information that will keep her son safe? There is more to find out as the plot develops but it's never less than interesting.What was so impressive about this little thriller is the way it began with it's basic concept and then didn't try to become anything else along the way. There are twists and turns tied into the plot line but at a time when every other little film like this would seem to morph into a sub-Saw movie or a Tarantino-esquire, smartass, blackly comic outing this film resolutely sticks to what it is: an enjoyable, lean thriller centred around a woman confused and scared who's only aim is to ensure the survival of her son.Melissa George is excellent in the lead role but everyone does well with their screen time, including the likes of Oded Fehr, Donald Adams, Christian Campbell and the regal Alice Krige. As the film centres on the relationship between captive and captor it's almost a two-hander set in one place for the majority of the time but the movie never feels too stagey or limited with this, you're just far too busy being kept on the edge of your seat with tension and revelations in a little gem that is perfectly paced and well-executed.See this if you like: Panic Room, Cohen & Tate, Taken.

Movie Title: Twin Town

Description: Twin Town opens with panoramic ocean wide shots Swansea, being the site of action for the next hour and a half. The serene setting with miles of old terraced housing also suddenly cut off by two young boys tearing around the neighborhood in a two tone BMW 525. Julian and Jeremy are in deep trouble. Their dysfunctional family scrapes together a living from their money and distribute odd jobs-offered to his father. The boys have become long abuse of drugs and car theft lead a happy and carefree in the heart of the city without hopper. In due course the plot thickens when the guys are out for revenge against the rich club owner Bryn is not particularly helpful in providing compensation when his father is affected by an accident when working on site. The boys are fairly imaginative when it comes to planning the strike, culminating in scenes that everyone who hates dogs and will love karaoke loathers.

User Reviews: The film has everything you'd want it to have. Especially if you're British. Probably more of a bloke's film, but still fun for everyone.The story is brilliant, and so accurately welsh. Every minor detail adds to the whole experience. The film progresses like a serious drama and seems to come out with brilliant comedy without even trying. As well as the actual storyline being funny, little quirks about each character and even the attention to welsh detail makes you laugh.Not only is it well written, it's also beautifully filmed, and makes great use of the camera. The film encompasses a huge range of interesting shots.Enhancing the film further was it's great choice of cast. All the characters were perfectly conveyed, and film avoided any bad performances.The music is also something to listen out for, as it stands out as a good piece of work on it's own.I highly recommend Twin Town (especially if you're British), as it's an exciting film experience with a great story, interesting shots, decent actors, and appropriate use of excessive swearing and violence.
